Screensmart Wins
Celebrate a teacher, share positive feedback, and help us promote responsible tech use in school.
A Moment of Gratitude
When advocating for positive change, it can sometimes seem like you’re anti-everything-else. But at HeadsUp, we’re not anti-tech: we’re pro-education! We believe intentional use of edtech can contribute to our kids’ life-long learning journey.
And we love our teachers. We are immensely grateful for all the work they do, and we know that their jobs extend way beyond our concerns about Chromebooks and smartboards.
To that end, this section is about celebrating our teachers’ tireless efforts to make our kids happy, healthy, safe, and screensmart.
Has your kids’ teacher:
opted for an analog solution, even though there was an easy tech alternative?
taken the time to teach their class about responsible tech use?
come up with creative non-tech activities?
employed tech in a really thoughtful and intentional way?
Please share your win with us here. We’ll add some celebrations to this page (see below) and share them with parents, teachers, and district admin to help promote a screensmart community.
Screensmart Win: Paper Prep
When I was invited to my son’s “publishing party” for his third-grade book project, I was a little stunned to find that the book was actually a Canva presentation. I spiraled: are kids even writing anymore? Do they just do everything on their Chromebooks? Am I raising some kind of cyborg?!
Then his teacher sent home a thick stack of worksheets (pictured here) that my son had to complete before even opening Canva. It contained dozens of frameworks to help him think about how to structure the narrative and craft a compelling story. And it was all handwritten!
It was a great reminder that there’s more going on in the classroom than what my son tells me or what I see on the surface. And I was reminded to try to panic less, and lead with a little more trust and gratitude.
